Is Simon Cowell pulling out all the stops this season, his last on American Idol, to guarantee a Crystal Bowersox victory? Ohio's "Mamasox" may well be the most talented singer in the competition this year, but sour Simon is taking no chances that his legacy on the show will be cemented by a Crystal win.
Is the zeal for Crystal at the expense of Siobhan Magnus?Cowell's weekly commentary on Bowersox's performances regularly proclaim that she is the one to beat, in another league from the rest of the finalists. It wouldn't be a bit surprising to find out, should Crystal pull it off, that Simon has set himself up as the producer of her first record.
In his zeal to propel Crystal to the crown, however, the bitter Brit has unleashed some of his nastiest remarks ever on Idol's only other remaining female finalist, Cape Cod's Siobhan Magnus.
Considered early on the co-favorite along with Bowersox, the Irish-American 20-year-old with the room-shaking pipes has been on the receiving end of Simon's most mean-spirited vitriol the last two weeks.
Cowell finally had the unmitigated nerve last Tuesday to tell Magnus that she didn't know who she was as an artist. Simon, really? You've made a living releasing inane recordings of things like the Teletubbies and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Honestly, you wouldn't know "art" if it jumped up and bit you.
Does Simon know something we don't? Like American Idol's vote totals? Crystal has been "safe" every week of the finals, but so has Siobhan, in spite of Cowell's snarky attacks.
Magnus has a huge fan-base on Facebook and Twitter, especially since belting what has become known as "the note" the night she sang Aretha Franklin's "Think."
Her stunning version of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" is universally regarded as the standout performance of the season thus far, drawing comparisons to last season's showman, Adam Lambert. Chill out, Cowell. It's obvious what's going on. You want Crystal to win, we get it. And you're going to torpedo Siobhan Magnus if that's what it takes (it's obvious you don't like her much, either). Bowersox would, in fact, be a worthy winner of American Idol, but be careful - your plan to throw Siobhan under the bus just might backfire. And I seriously doubt you'll get a chance to produce one note of Magnus' album. The Irish don't forget, Simon.
