Season four 'American Idol' winner Carrie Underwood releases third album TuesdayIt's been a while since there's been any new Idol-related music, but the drought is over. In the coming weeks, four new CDs will hit the racks, including the initial offerings from Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, and Allison Iraheta.

First up is Carrie Underwood's third album, Play On, which drops Nov. 3. This album is critical for Carrie in that, historically, third Idol albums have not done very well. In fact, none have even gone platinum, and some have been disastrous.

But Carrie Underwood should break this third album curse. Her first two releases have sold a combined total of nearly 10 million and there's no reason to believe Play On will not do as well as Carnival Ride, which is still on the charts and approaching 3 million in sales.

In fact, Play On has a much richer sound than either Carnival Ride or Some Hearts.  Carrie's vocals sound crisper and she demonstrates even greater range. I feel more depth in her interpretation of the lyrics as well. The instrumentals are tight and textured as well. And, there are some really stunning songs on this one, including "Temporary Home," "Someday When I Stop Loving You," and "Look at Me."  There isn't one back track on this album and I expect an abundance of singles forthcoming.

When Carrie was on Idol, Simon Cowell predicted she would be the best-selling Idol alum of all time. Play On should be the realization of Simon's prediction. Like Carrie, this one's a winner.
