Ruben Studdard may have found a little career success in his post-American Idol days, but his marriage is down in the dumps. People reported the season 2 winner filed for divorce from his wife of three years, Surata Zuri McCants, on Thursday, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason "Ruben and Zuri have gone their separate ways," his rep said.
According to the New York Daily News, Studdard and McCants met at an Atlanta Wal-Mart in 2006 where the singer had a CD signing event. After dating for two years, they tied the knot in June 2008 at Canterbury United Methodist Church in Mountain Brook, Alabama. Studdard told Essence magazine that the private ceremony was "exactly what we wanted, a celebration of family and friends."Now, not only is that relationship over, Studdard's singing career also took a hit as well.
Since he was named an AI winner in 2003, his first album, Soulful, earned him a Grammy nomination for his hit single, "Superstar." His second album, I Need an Angel, debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200. But his last album, The Return, only sold 71,000 copies in its first week. It's okay, Ruben, there are plenty of other Wal-Marts to pick up women at.
